The feeling of being surrounded by folks who seemingly are oblivious to 1. the beauty around them, and 2, God's role in it all, is a bit daunting, and overwhelming, as you're trying to even imagine how they can deny His creation! And I can see how you would marvel at the way He gifted people to create such masterpieces. You've seen such diversity back and forth. Isn't it amazing though, how you feel so close to God, when so far away from home? I remember that part well, when in France at your exact age. You and your boyfriend seem to be troubled in such similar ways, in your spiritual observances anyway, on these trips.
